I work predominantly in prose, which is almost always led by tone and feeling. From there, themes emerge to inform and build the visual art around the text, allowing the conversation in the piece to spill outwards; the words are the core and centre. I am interested in prompting the reader/viewer to situate themselves within the same thought or feeling.
My work often explores themes of the Self—not feeling like oneself and the desire to feel whole and embodied—what might arise from internal discordance. I am interested in belonging vs displacement, connection vs otherworldliness, the desire of the soul vs the pursuit of the mind, and their cohabitation within the body and their relation to the world at large. When using images, I particularly like to work with 35mm film and instant film. I like to see how an image changes on various types of paper, i.e. cotton rag, rice paper, Bristol paper, watercolor paper, onion skin and vellum. The tactility of paper, along with film photography, lends itself to the textures of emotion and atmosphere I’m attempting to create between the body in the image and the mind in the text.
